I’ve had quite a few customers purchase Ikea cabinets. They buy them because they are economical!! The carcasses are usually 1/2" particle baord veneer. The shelves are only 1/2". They normally use European hinges, cheap ones!!
The drawer hardware is very good, though.
Ikea kitchen cabinets are a short term ( 5 years) replacement. Although the doors and drawer fronts can be quite nice, and the drawer mechanisms are quite good, the particle core 1/2" design does not stand up to "Normal" cupboard use. The shelves that you place canned goods on will start to sag. If the weight is too much, the location pins can even pull out. The doors stand up well, but the carcass of particle core will not sustain long term hinge movement. the screws start to strip out of the holes, and the hinges fail after a time.
Noe Ikea does have a "high End’ style of cabinet that are custom fitted, and are of 5/8" melamine particle core. These are a little stronger, but again, they are not designed to last forever!
I strongly recommend, however, Ikea cabinets for someone who is looking for a nice, economical cabinet set that will last 5 or 6 years, to give them time to save for a properly custom built kitchen cabinet set.
I have installed them. They look great for a period of time. Just remember, they are economical general use cabinets. DO NOT overload them with canned goods or dishes. Open and close them gently. Don’t fling them open or slam them shut! They are not built for abuse!!
If you go with Ikea or other ‘Big Box" store cabinetry, plan on replacing them within 10 years, at the outside. Ikea is also very good at standing behind their product. If a cabinet is faulty or damaged through no fault of yours, they will gladly replace the unit. they are great people to work with.
Take the time to discuss your needs with an Ikea kitchen specialist in the store, to make sure you get the right set of cabinets for your lifestyle, and use.
I am watching this one…I was thinking of using IKEA in my house as well…sorry I wish I had the info for you.
Good Luck!
